Parenting – What Are You Doing Wrong?

“Parenting or child rearing is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. Parenting refers to the aspects of raising a child aside from biological relationship”.

This post is not to give you parenting tips or teach you how to raise your child because I know you are doing an amazing job. But, there are some lapses in parenting that seem trivial to you but may gradually be destroying your child’s future. These lapses could be recurring actions as:

Allowing Your Child to Blackmail You – Children are fond of using emotions e.g. crying as a way of getting what they want especially from their parents. Do not allow your child blackmail you into allowing him/her engage in any activity you don’t approve of because you hate to see him/her cry. For instance, you allowed your child to sit in the passenger seat (extremely dangerous for your child) of your car because he/she cried when you asked him/her to sit in the back seat. Rather, explain to that child that the safest place for a kid younger than thirteen is the back seat (especially the middle seat).

Another instance is allowing your under-aged child (between 6 and 15 years old) persuade you to allow him/her watch content meant for 18+. You should always check the ratings on movies, video games and other contents before allowing your child see them because these things could have negative effects on him/her as he/she intends to act out what has been seen in these movies and games. A movie rated “G” is meant for everyone but the one rated ‘’18+’’ is meant for those who are 18 years and above not for children.

Making Your Child Unuseful – From age two, allow your child do his/her chores like picking the toys after playing not leaving them for you to do, that way you are teaching your child Responsibility. Teach him/her to clear the table after meal, wash his/her stockings, etc.

Giving Your Child Everything – The worst thing you can do for your child is to give him/her everything he/she ask for. You are gradually making him/her handicap and this will cripple him/her in future. Such a child will most likely have the notion that everything must be provided for him/her. If my child asks for 1000 toys, I will ask him/her to pick one.

Giving Your Child Access to Gadgets – This is ‘tech’ age and people are exposed to the technology world everyday including  children. Since the evolvement of social media, we all want to be heard and seen but the contents on these social media platforms can be misconstrued by children. A teacher friend narrated her experience with one of her female students whose seized phone was found to contain different types of porn videos; the mum who was later notified of this cried her eyes out because she was not privy to such activity of her daughter.

At what age will you allow your child use a phone?

Unobserved Mood Swings in Your Child – Mood swings is common in teens which can be as a result of bully, depression, peer pressure, poor grades, etc.

Parenting is more of role modelling to a child than biological relationship. It has to do with encouraging good morals in the child that will benefit all in future.
